Project topic

"Waste to water" feasibility study on generating energy to be used in seawater desalination in Malta by incinerating waste material

Contracting Party

Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, Malta (EU-funded project with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety)

Aims and scope

Against the backdrop of rising energy costs and the resulting dependency on the so-called oil states, the aim was to explore whether the energy produced by incinerating massive amounts of generated waste could be used to desalinate water.

Project topics

  • Analysis of the ecological, energy-related and economic potential
  • Investigate the utilisable waste fractions, recycling and desalination options and develop viable technology combinations
  • Cost effectiveness evaluation, preliminary site selection, financing and subsidy options, possibility of enhancing acceptance

Special feature

The concept can be adapted to other situations and regions.
